My First Experience with Roses

Hello Fellow Gardeners,

My first attempt, 10 years ago, at buying and planting roses resulted in a dismal failure because I did not know enough about these beautiful plants.

I had purchased bare root hybrid tea roses from a popular chain store. They had been left in the full sun in a huge bin outdoors in the middle of July- still in their packaging.  I remember telling my husband, “look at this! This is a deal!  Imagine $1.00 each!  For roses! Wow!

Well we bought 12 hybrid teas took them home and planted them and waited … and waited… as you might have guessed- we actually planted 12 dead roses!

But at the time we were just beginning in the gardening world and we were so hopeful (and a little green).  Now we laugh about it, especially since I have 100+ roses in my garden.

Obviously, I did not let that failure defeat me!  I took advantage of the winter months to educate myself about my favorite plant. I read voraciously and found out that with roses timing is everything!

Roses are really not any more work than the rest of the plants in your garden.  In my next article I will let you know which roses I had good luck with, and my personal favorites!

Until Then,

Happy Gardening

Marie Suzanne

Did you say 100 roses! That must be a really perfumed garden. Could you post some pictures of your garden.
