Weeds to Watch For…

Hello Fellow Gardeners,

This is the time of year for gardening! Unfortunately along with the flowers comes those pesky things called weeds! I thought I would compile a list of websites and links to help you learn and identify weeds in your garden. As you will see– it’s quite a list!

Some weeds look as nice as flowers– but be warned! Don’t leave that weed in your flower bed, it will just spread…and spread…and spread! Weeds are tricky little buggers!

Here is a list of common weeds to watch for…

Common Chickweed

My ultimate gardening enemy is Nettle! I have gotten stung by this prickly plant so many times, I’ve lost count! However, recently I found a very interesting website that actually shows a good side to Nettle. Needless to say, I was fascinated! In my opinion, this is a must read!

dw-tip-pic.JPG I find it useful to go around my garden once a week with my homemade book of weeds! In it I printed out pictures of all those nasty plants, complete with information such as their name and removal methods, so I can easily identify them in my garden and stop them in their tracks!

    Hi Marie Suzanne,
I found you while looking up information about landscaping with clematis. I was hooked and have you on the top of my customized gmail page.

My question: Please help me identify pests that plague roses. I have two new Bonica shrubs roses just planted a month ago in fresh soil and with care to follow all the planting rules and soil amendments, including attention to drainage. The only ’sin’ perhaps I committed is that I used the existing hardwood mulch as a final topping around the outer base of the roses.

The lower leaves of both bushes have been attacked by ‘munchers’ which are making holes in the leaves, some larger holes, some very tiny. I went to our local UWISCONSIN Extension website and a few others and found that it MIGHT be sawflies or cutter wasp larvae. Purchased Bayer systemic granules and have applied them, seems to have stopped the attack, but I’m not sure I’ve solved the problem. Please let me know. My yard is graces by six rugosa shrub roses and 2 Bonicas which are supposed to be very resistant to pests and illness, and two Double Delight roses. These are all plantings by bare root except the Bonicas. All of them are flourishing, except the predations on the Bonicas and a chewed lower leaf of the Double Delight which is in another bed entirely from the Bonicas. I would truly appreciate more info and once again, thank you for your wonderful blog. I will recommend it to my friends. Marcia from near Madison,wi

Marie, I found your site a couple of days ago and really enjoy reading your very useful information.

I just read about the weeds and found the idea of carrying a book of weeds along with pictures very useful. I think I will make up one of my garden here in Utah.

Thanks again for a most useful website. Keep up the good work. Enjoy.
