Hello Fellow Gardeners,
If you want something truly unique for your garden, you may want to try the new roses for 2008! Not only do roses add a major *wow* factor to any garden, but roses are surprisingly easy to grow, are one of the most gorgeous flowers available, and a great way to add color, scent and texture to your garden! Edmund’s Roses is one of my favorite places to shop, and they offer a unique new 2008 rose collection which we feature here…
Loved Knock Out? You’ll love Double Knock Out too! Hardy to zone 4, this rose is grown on it’s own roots, and grows to between 3 ft. and 4 ft. Unfortunately this crimson beauty does not have a scent, but you’ll get to enjoy the lovely blooms all summer long!
Unfortunately, this rose does not have a listing of which zone it’s hardy to, but if you want to take a chance, I would recommend providing it with winter protection. The good news is that it is on it’s own roots, so that is a clue that it should be hardy to at least zone 5. This repeat bloomer is a climber and grows between 6 ft. and 8 ft. tall!
Hardy to zone 5, this climbing rose is grown on it’s own roots, and grows between 6 ft. and 8 ft! Again, no fragrance, but blooms constantly! This rose will need winter protection, as do all roses that you plant that are not for your zone.
One of the few miniatures introduced this year, this gorgeous multi-color rose, blooms all summer and has a slight fragrance. Grown on it’s own root, it should be hardy to zone 5 (though again, it does not have a listing to which zone it is hardy to). I would recommend providing it with winter protection just to be safe!
This dark red/orange miniature beauty is perfect to add oomph to that dull little corner of your garden! Grown on it’s own root, it should be hardy to zone 5 (though again, it does not have a listing to which zone it is hardy to). This tiny rose features a mild tea scent, repeat blooms, and grows to between 12 and 16 inches! The size is also great for containers! I would recommend providing it with winter protection just to be safe!
Own root roses have a lot of benefits such as being more winter hardy (a better chance of survival), are healthier, will last a lifetime (or more!), and as an added bonus, there are no suckers! For more information on the benefits of own root roses check out Heirloom Roses.
Remember, if you find something you like here, order early (like now!)! Everyone is looking for that totally unique flower that no one else has, and you would be surprised how quickly the new varieties run out.
Stay tuned for more tips, tricks, ideas and inspiration from the Daily Weeder!

Hello Fellow Gardeners,
As you all know, roses are my passion! Around this time of year, many companies start releasing information on what’s new for next Spring, and of course roses are the first thing I look for! I spend a lot of time eagerly browsing, clicking, and just generally salivating over the new varieties! Well, I figure I can’t be the only one out there with such an…intense interest, so this week the Daily Weeder will share what’s new for cold climates in the wonderful world of roses…
I’m going to start with one of my favorite brands of roses—David Austin! These British beauties generally grow very well in our zones (zones 2-5) with some winter protection. Also, I have found David Austin roses to be consistently high quality, fragrant, and beautiful.
Okay, let’s get to the fun part—what’s new to add to your garden in the Spring…
This repeat flowering old rose hybrid grows to 3 ft x 2 ft, features gorgeous red double full blooms, has a medium fruity fragrance, and is hardy. For more information, or to purchase, simply click on the above picture to go directly to David Austin’s website.
This repeat flowering medium shrub grows to 4 ft x 3 ft, features classic pale/medium pink double full blooms, a strong old rose scent, and is very hardy!
This repeat flowering medium shrub grows 4 ft x 3 ft, features a fruity old rose scent, pretty deep pink/orange double full blooms, and is hardy!
This repeat flowering medium shrub grows 4 ft x 3 ft, features a light scent, beautiful yellow/pink double blooms, and is hardy.
This repeat flowering medium shrub grows to 4 ft x 4 ft, and features a strong myrrh fragrance, classic coral/pink double full blooms, and is hardy.
This repeat flowering medium shrub grows to 4 ft x 3 ft, and features a strong fragrance, beautiful apricot double full blooms, is hardy, and is practically thorn-less!
If you see anything you simply can’t live without, I would recommend ordering it right away! It may seem silly to order a rose six months before you can plant it, but usually companies operate on a first come first serve basis, and believe me, people have already started lining up!
Stay tuned for more information on what’s new in the wonderful world of roses!
