Roses That Make a Difference!
Hello Fellow Gardener’s,
There are few times in life when you get to have your cake and eat it too! We gardeners have a big heart, but we still want beautiful flowers for our garden. Well, it’s the best of both worlds with the Jackson and Perkins Roses for a Cause collection! We cold-climate gardeners don’t often get a chance to partake in these type of events. However, after taking a look at the beautiful roses that are offered, there are three that come on their own root, and therefore have a particularly good chance of surviving our incredibly cold winters. Check out these three beautiful roses in three gorgeous colors…
The Lady Bird Johnson
Quoted from Jackson and Perkins: “10% of net sales supports the Lady Bird Johnson Wild Flower Center, founded by the former First Lady. (Over $5,975 donated to date.)”
This dark orange-red beauty is a Hybrid Tea, features a “spicy fragrance” and is ideal for cutting! It also grows to be 5-6 ft tall so make room!
The Pope John Paul II
Quoted from Jackson and Perkins: “Our magnificent flowering tribute to one of the world’s most beloved leaders (10% of net sales is donated to the poor of sub-Saharan Africa. Over $57,685 donated to date.).”
This incredibly beautiful and delicate-looking white rose is a Hybrid Tea, and features a “strong citrus fragrance!” The Pope John Paul II rose grows to be 4-5 ft. high.
The Laura Bush
Quoted from Jackson and Perkins: “A fitting tribute to the First Lady, who is an avid gardener and rosarian, this rose also honors Mrs. Bush’s many contributions to education, literacy, and global health.”
This rich orange rose is a Floribunda, and features a “fruity fragrance,” and grows to be 3 ft. high.
All of the roses mentioned above should be planted with the crown 2-4 inches below the ground, and will need additional winter protection to survive in our cold climates. A bit more work, but look at the result!
If you happen to be joining us from a warmer climate (zone 5 and above) you may want to check out the other six roses in the Jackson and Perkins Roses for a Good Cause collection…
The Daily Weeder is not associated in any way with Jackson and Perkins, we are just passing on information about a good cause and a great opportunity for cold climate gardeners everywhere!
If you love a rose above, I would recommend purchasing it ASAP, because beauties like these have a tendency to go fast!
Stay tuned for more tips, tricks, ideas, and inspiration on cold climate gardening from the Daily Weeder!
